We
were flying on Frontier again, our local budget airline. Well
as usual the flight was delayed but luckily it was only for
a short time, at least we weren't flying on United were every
flight seems to be delayed for at least an hour. |

On
a more up beat note, we found ourselves with three seats,
lots of room for Shannon to relax (seat hog to you and me).
|
We
arrived in Chicago about 30 minutes late, which was quite
good since we left about 50 minutes late. Midway Airport is
an older airport, that is currently being refurbished and
brought into the 21st century, and the sooner the better.
Shannon says the departure gates remind her of cellblocks,
small concrete block rooms.
|
After
picking up our rental car we were on our way downtown. As we
left the airport the surrounding neighborhood brought back memories
of areas in Washington, D.C. Not the nicest airport, in the
nicest part of town. |
 |
I
thought the drivers in Denver were a little on the wild side
but they have nothing on those in Chicago. Darting in and
out of traffic, pulling out without any regard for other road
users. The driver of a black Range Rover takes the top aggressive
driver award. After zooming down the left hand turn lane he
suddenly pulled back into traffic to continue straight on,
narrowly missing the oncoming car that was trying to turn
left. I have to say I did as little driving as possible for
those few days.
|
We
finally arrived at the hotel after going round in circles a
few times due to road works around the hotel, (looks like they
will be at it for a while).Upon arriving at the hotel we inquired
about parking the car, where we were informed that it was all
valet parking. And to top it off I had to pick myself off the
floor after being told it was $33 a night. At this point I was
glad this was a business trip for Shannon and her company was
picking up most of the expenses. It was then off to check in,
no shock there. After dropping off our bags in the room and
a quick change of clothes, it was time to explore Chicago. |

We
decided to start by visiting the Navy Pier. Built as a commercial
pier in 1916 it was renamed in honor of the Navy in 1927. After
being renovated in 1995 it now contains shopping arcades, a
Ferris wheel, an ice-skating rink and a beer garden to name
but a few. Many of the city's lake and dinner cruises also sail
from here. We walked around for a while, not doing anything
special just taking it all in. |
By
this time Shannon's little voice was saying, "feed me"
so it was time to look for some food. On our way back to the
hotel we came across an Irish pub called Lizzie McNeil's. It
was fairly basic food, English/Irish done in that American way.
Although we were able to have quite a good pint. |
After
a quiet meal it was time to head back to the hotel, we took
a slow walk and stopped to take a few night pictures of the
hotel and the surrounding buildings. Then it was back to our
room to plan out our route for the next day and to relax for
the rest of the evening. |
